Elk County Seeks Steering Committee for Potential Project

Elk County Commissioners are seeking community volunteers to serve on a Steering Committee to assess public support for a County Event Center. The initial concept is to construct a large building at the Elk County Rodeo Grounds near Moline. The County governing body would utilize the space for public meetings. The building could also be used for commercial events such as craft fairs, quilt shows or gun shows. Youth organizations such as 4-H Clubs could host events there. The building would be available for rent for private events such as weddings, family gatherings, and reunions. With cooperation from the Elk County Rodeo Association, many types of events would be made possible, providing a boost to the economy of the County.

Commissioners plan to pursue grant funding for half the cost of the project, and will seek partnerships, fundraising, and donations to finance part of the remaining cost. The time frame for construction would most likely be 2023.

Ideally, the Steering Committee would represent all townships and/or cities in the County, and include people of varied ages, backgrounds and perspectives. Commissioners will select up to 15 members and a chairperson from the applicants.

The Steering Committee would establish its own meeting schedule, but the recommendation is to meet once a week for six (6) weeks. The purpose of the Committee is to present Commissioners with recommendations as to what type of facility, if any, should be built. While steering committee members would not be compensated for their time, the County would reimburse mileage and provide meals or refreshments for the meetings.

Interested persons should contact the Elk County Clerk’s office at 620-374-2490 and request a Steering Committee Interest Form. The form will collect basic demographic and contact information.  Commissioners will announce the Steering Committee at their August 9th meeting.
